Making friends while making dinner

Submitted by Amy Roe on Tuesday, March 16th, 03:00pm

When Rachel Duboff, a private chef, took over running the Wallingford Community Kitchen about six months ago, it was in semi-active mode.

Duboff turned up the heat. These days about 30 people show up for the monthly dinner, which is always on a Friday night, though there is no set date. The next one is 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 19, in room 140 of the Good Shepherd Center.

Cabbage and potatoes will be the theme of the night. Duboff will demonstrate making kimchee and sauerkraut.

Run on the model of community kitchens that became popular in the 1960s, the Wallingford Community Kitchen is a collaborative process but it's not a throwback. There's the requisite Facebook page.

Participants sign up to bring ingredients, and everyone preps and cooks together, each according to their ability.

Saturday Smackdown: Waterfront vs. the libraries

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Friday, March 5th, 01:04pm

Two big planning meetings are being held tomorrow, at the same exact time!

Do you want to help envision Seattle’s post-viaduct waterfront, or design the library of the future?

From 2- to 4 p.m. at the Ballard Branch Library, SPL is holding one of its open houses designed to promote big-picture thinking in order to plan the next-gen library.

But wait!

From 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Northgate Community Center, 10510 5th Ave NE., there will be an open house to plan what the waterfront will look like once the viaduct is replaced.

There are more waterfront and libraries meetings to come, so you can catch up with the one you missed later.

Are you a friend of the Troll?

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Friday, February 19th, 01:27pm

What about the Troll's Knoll?

The Fremont Troll is one of Seattle's most popular landmarks but the surrounding area doesn't always feel the love. Blackberry bushes, litter -- the troll's knoll could use some help.

A group called Friends of the Troll's Knoll has already organized a clean-up, and tonight they're gearing up to do more to improve the troll's habitat. They're meeting Monday to discuss applying for the Parks Levy Opportunity Fund to help. Anyone is welcome to join them and share ideas.

The meeting is at 6 pm. at Fremont Baptist Church (717 N. 36th St)

Contact: Kimberly Scrivner 253-732-0885

The meeting room is accessed on the east side of the building at the bottom of the ramp.

Send yourself to Cupcake Camp

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Thursday, February 18th, 12:56pm

On April 10, Cupcake Camp Seattle, a free cupcake baking-and-eating confab, will be in session from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. at 415 Westlake.

Bake or buy cupcakes to bring, or just come to buy and eat them. There will be cupcake-eating contests, cupcake-wrapper decorating, bake-offs, and probably a lot of pink.

The event is a fundraiser for the Hope Heart Institute, so it's not just sweet-sweet, it's charity-sweet, too.

See you there!

City Light: Finally getting it together?

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Wednesday, February 17th, 12:44pm

City Council is changing the way City Light is governed.

The council will consolidate oversight of the utility into one nine-member City Light Review panel comprised of a cross-section of citizens from business and neighborhoods.

The panel will be charged with assessing City Light’s financial policies and reviewing rate changes.

The council is discussing legislation mandating the change this month, and councilmember Bruce Harrell expects it to be passed by the full council in early March. Harrell has pushed for a financial evaluation of the agency.

The group will meet at least four times in a twelve-month period and that those meetings will be open to the public.
